"You're Magical"

World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD) is observed on 21 March. On this day, people with Down syndrome and those who live and work with them throughout the world organise and participate in activities and events to raise public awareness and create a single global voice for advocating for the rights, inclusion and well-being of people with Down syndrome. 

The date for WDSD being the 21st day of the 3rd month, was selected to signify the uniqueness of the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome which causes Down syndrome.  

Down syndrome is a naturally occurring chromosomal arrangement that has always been a part of the human condition, being universally present across racial, gender or socio-economic lines. Down syndrome is estimated to be one in every 1 000 live births in developed countries and one in every 650 live births in developing countries. In South Africa it is roughly one in every 500. Down syndrome usually causes varying degrees of intellectual and physical disability and associated medical issues.

Individuals with Down syndrome are becoming increasingly integrated into society and community organizations, such as school, health care systems, work forces, and social and recreational activities. Individuals with Down syndrome possess varying degrees of cognitive delays, from very mild to severe. Most people with Down syndrome have cognitive delays that are mild to moderate. 

Due to advances in medical technology, individuals with Down syndrome are living longer than ever before. In 1910, children with Down syndrome were expected to survive to age nine. With the discovery of antibiotics, the average survival age increased to 19 or 20. Now, with recent advancements in clinical treatment, most particularly corrective heart surgeries, as many as 80% of adults with Down syndrome reach age 60, and many live even longer. 

"You’re Magical” is a support group founded by Trudy Chetty. It is designed to assist people with Down Syndrome and to let them know they are special, gifted and unique.

Our mission is to create and nurture a loving and inclusive community celebrating every person with a disability, including Down Syndrome. We will accomplish this mission by empowering and supporting families and individuals who have been touched by Down syndrome. We want to work together to increase education, promote public understanding and acceptance, work toward full inclusion, and defend the civil rights of individuals with Down Syndrome. One of the services the group will offer is speech and occupational therapies, free of charge. Children with Down Syndrome have speech impediments and this service will help families that cannot afford specialist fees. Something people may not be aware of, for instance, is the need for babysitters. Many parents who care for children with disabilities often need just a night off.  Baby sitters is also one of the services to be offered by You're Magical.
